THELMA design’s guiding principle is to encourage women to wear headpieces more often, and use them as an attractive, outgoing mode of positive self-expression. Headpieces give women an additional, imaginative item they can use to further enhance their looks on formal or intimate occasions – they can bring grace and elegance, striking individuality or seductive sensuality. THELMA design’s headpieces become an integral part of each woman’s appearance and personality.

Thelma Bjork Jonsdottir

At a very young age, Thelma took an interest in needlework. She became fascinated with traditions, and under the guidance and influence of her grandmother, Thelma practised and perfected her mentor’s techniques.

Still inspired by needlework, Thelma graduated with a BA in fashion design – she was top of her class at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. While an undergraduate, she attended Studio Bercot in Paris and went on to complete professional training in haute couture needlework, gaining a diploma from the prestigious Ecole LESAGE (Ateliere de Broderie). She has with the years specialized in embroidery, knit and crochet.

Thelma became fascinated by headwear. She worked on different embroidery techniques and began to experiment with making headpieces. This interest developed as well as her skills and in 2005 Thelma launched her label THELMA design, specialising in handmade headpieces and embroidery. She is now the firm’s Creative Director.

Created in 2005, THELMA design is a brand devised for one of Iceland's leading fashion designers. THELMA design specialises in handmade, high quality headpieces.

THELMA design has quickly gained a reputation for quality handwork as the production is in the hands of experienced professionals and all fabrics are picked by Thelma. Still today Thelma herself produces 30% and is in charge of quality control as she checks every piece before it is shipped out. All pieces released from THELMA design are handmade.

A long developing process is behind every collection. Fabrics and techniques are tested by Thelma and other professionals to get the best possible outcome. Every collection draws on multiform influences and on different embroidery techniques. How ever, over all, each collection has it´s signature technique.
